SFU Clan 6, TRU Wolfpack 4

The SFU Clan finished the 2012-13 season on a winning note Saturday, quieting the TRU Wolfpack 6-4 in a preview of next week’s first-round playoff matchup.

Graduating players had a big impact for the Clan: goaltender Evan Kurylo stopped 32 of 36 shots, and forward Ben Van Lare had a pair of assists in the win. Kurylo stopped every shot he should have in this one; the four goals all came on ridiculous defensive breakdowns, including a 2-on-0 break for the Wolfpack when SFU was up 3-0 early in the second period. For his part, Van Lare was probably robbed of a goal in his last game for the Clan, as we in the broadcast booth saw him tip the Mike Ball point shot past Wolfpack goalie Adrien Hervillard with 29 seconds remaining in the second period. The official scoring on the play was changed after the fact, however, to give Ball the goal, and Van Lare the assist instead.

Can you believe it? We’ve finally made 50 of these damned podcasts. Half a century of Pucked in the Head.

We yak about old guys, young guys, rule changes that should have been, and other fanboy wank. Jason hasn’t had his morning coffee, so in the course of today’s podcast, he threatens to drop the gloves with Gary Bettman, cut Chris open like a Tauntaun & climb inside for warmth. Of course, he’s talks a big game but he barely has the wherewithal to cut upon a steak if it’s too rare. He does, however, reach all the way back to the very first episode of this podcast — when it was still called Bernier is a Turd — to find Chris’s famous Andrew Alberts goat call.

I was at a Vancouver Canucks practice earlier this week, and got a few good shots I’d like to share.

But first, why not support some other teams around town this weekend? (Well, any weekend, really,  but I’m posting this on January 11, 2013.)

Friday, January 11:
• The Abbotsford Heat host the Canucks farm team, the Chicago Wolves, tonight at the AESC. At last check, a few tickets were still available.
• The UBC Lady Thunderbirds host the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns at Thunderbird Arena (the very place the Canucks have been skating throughout the clusterbleep lockout.)

Saturday January 12:
• The Vancouver Giants host the Kelowna Rockets on Saturday, January 12 at the Pacific Coliseum.
• The Lady Thunderbirds go against the Pronghorns for the back half of their weekend double-header.
• The Heat host the Wolves again in Abbotsford, but that game is sold out.

Great Northwest Showcase Finale – SFU Clan vs ASU Sun Devils

I didn’t get a chance to post pictures from the final game of the Great Northwest Showcase, a 5-3 win for the Arizona State Sun Devils over the host SFU Clan. The Sun Devils found their legs between the previous day’s misadventures against the UBC Thunderbirds — and chatter by players during pre-game stretches suggested the Americans aren’t used to the aggressive forechecks thrown at them by the T-birds on Friday.

Great Northwest Showcase Day 2 – The Empire Strikes Back

Okay, I already feel bad about the title. Sure, the visiting teams in the inaugural Great Northwest Showcase are American. And yes, there are national politics and cultural question marks that make them the Darths and Emperors of the world next to our farmboy-cum-Jedi status up here. But goldang it if each and every one of the team members and staff that I met this weekend weren’t incredibly nice, wonderfully passionate people who revolve their lives around the great game of hockey. (I’m lookin’ at you, Oklahoma University men’s hockey Assistant GM Chris Kelly… Not naming any names…)

But hey, the title is what the title is. In the immortal words of Billy Crystal, “It’s already out there.” And after day one of this exhibition tournament, which saw the Canadian teams trounce their American visitors by a combined score of 12-2, the empire really did strike back. They had to, just to make the plane ride back to the south bearable.

Canucks Minor Hockey Weekend: Vancouver Angels vs Richmond Ravens

The Vancouver Canucks Minor Hockey Weekend, which featured 24 minor hockey teams from across BC skating on Rogers Arena ice, concluded with a resounding call of “LET THE GIRLS PLAY!” Okay, it wasn’t the first female hockey game of the event, but with the leaps forward the women’s game has made over the past few years, it seemed fitting that the Vancouver Angels and Richmond Ravens Atom teams would face off to the final puck drop on Sunday afternoon.

These 9- and 10-year-old ladies played to a 1-1 draw, even tying the shootout before shaking hands and heading off the ice for tours of the Canucks dressing room and the chance to grill their own coaches in the media room. (Loads of pictures after the jump.)

Vancouver Giants woes continue, but the Xmas sweaters are awesome

Irish (and Aussie) eyes were smiling — and wearing glorious Christmas sweaters — at the Pacific Coliseum on Friday night despite the Vancouver Giants dropping a 3-1 decision to the Swift Current Broncos. The Vancouver Giants suffered their eighth loss in nine games on Friday night, a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the visiting Swift Current Broncos. Despite some early chances for the home side, the Broncos were up 2-0 before the first period was half over.

Goal number one came on a bad bounce off of captain Wes Vannieuwenhuizen’s skate past Payton Lee. It was reminiscent of an early goal the Giants scored in Victoria just a few nights ago on the way to a 7-2 romp over the Royals.

Sadly for the 8,115 fans who stuffed the Pacific Coliseum on Friday, the Giants weren’t able to make it two in a row. In fact, the G-men’s only win since Remembrance Day came on the road, something that makes it hard to take full advantage of the NHL’s ridiculous, ongoing lockout. Thankfully, the crowd on Friday included not only the best-dressed fivesome in Pacific Coliseum history, which you see above, but also busloads of energetic students from a handful of schools across the Lower Mainland.
